Hollister, CA (ContentDesk) May 24, 2006 -- Gene Zanger, managing partner of Casa de Fruta, threw out the first pitch Monday night at the San Francisco Giants game against the St. Louis Cardinals. Zanger launched a fastball to start the first game in San Franciscos only at-home series with the Cardinals. With so much emphasis on baseball records and players of the past, it is interesting to look back at history. When we founded our fresh and dried fruit business in 1908, players such as Ty Cobb and Honus Wagner were at their prime and breaking records. What a thrill, 98 years later, to have the opportunity to throw out the first pitch representing Casa de Fruta in the presence of todays great baseball stars such as Barry Bonds, Omar Vizquel, Tony LaRussa and Albert Pujols.Casa de Fruta (www.casadefruta.com) is a 98-year-old family business based in Hollister, California.
It encompasses fruit and nut orchards, an orchard resort, a winery and a web business selling fresh and dried fruits, nuts, chocolate covered fruits and nuts, wines, gourmet gift baskets and gift crates.Originally started in 1908 by Gene Zangers great, great uncles, Casa de Frutas fruit stand on Highway 152 became a landmark and popular pit stop to many California travelers crossing the Pacheco Pass in Hollister.
Casa de Fruta became known for its fresh and dried fruit and expanded its original 8- by 10-foot fruit stand over the years to include a gift shop, wine store, motel, restaurant, childrens zoo and train in its orchard resort.
Today, the company employs 200 people and processes more than 250,000 pounds of dried fruits and nuts annually which are shipped worldwide via its website www.casadefruta.com..

Mangosteen The Queen Of Fruits Comes To America in a Dietary Supplement Juice
(ContentDesk) October 24, 2005 -- Mangosteen is an evergreen tree about 30 to 75 feet tall when mature. The mangosteen tree is a small, slow growing tropical evergreen with leathery, glabrous leaves up to 10 inches long. Fruits are borne on lateral branches. They have a thick rind, which encloses 5 to 7 fleshy segments, in which the seeds are imbedded. Only about 25 to 30% of the mangosteen fruit consists of the edible pulp or rind, with the remainder comprising the tough, bitter pericarp.
Each mangosteen fruit usually varies in weight from 75 to 120 grams and normally contains 2 to 3 well-developed seeds. The pulp, the only part consumed, has excellent flavor, proclaimed by many as the best among tropical fruits. Often two crops per year mature, one in the autumn, and one in early summer. The trees often bear sparingly. The tree appears to be adapted best to strictly tropical areas and requires abundant moisture.

What to look for in a farmers market
It is time for farmers markets. They are popping up all around the country. They can range from a true farmers market with farm fresh produce locally grown and sold by the farmer to more of an arts and crafts show. When shopping at a farmers market the consumer needs to be wary of anyone selling fruit or vegetables that are not locally grown or are out of season. It is becoming common practice for some marketers to purchase the same produce that is available at the grocery and sell it in the farmers market venue.
Here are a few tips on what to look for in a farmers market.?Fresh local fruit and vegetables, no commercially grown produce.?Good prices, the price should be comparable to the grocery store. You may find that in some areas the farmers market is a bit higher but this can be well worth it if the produce is local and fresh.?Look for moist fresh looking produce. If the corn was picked yesterday it will begin to dry out at the bottom. Look for signs that the fruit and vegetables...
